Another mom has been gracious enough to share her story and let us peak into her personal version of motherhood for the Monday's Moms series. I'm thrilled to introduce Mrs. Laura Barrett!
Laura and her husband Chris are good friends of my whole extended family-- I have pictures of them dancing at my wedding (not to be shared here-- you're welcome, Laura). Chris came into our lives through his friendship with my uncle Kyle, who was killed tragically in 2003. We all watched his relationship with Laura unfold, hearing stories when they first met up until they finally tied the knot. Together, their story continues to unfold as they've since lived in several cities and welcomed their first son to the world.
Laura is our first work-from-home mom, running an [Etsy shop) of handmade goods while staying at home to raise little Thomas Kyle at the same time. Every story is unique, as is Laura's, so please check out her interview below to learn about her perspective and maybe even gain some of your own.
How many kids do you have and what are their ages? One, Thomas, he is 8 months.
What is your job? Are you full-time/part-time/whenever-you-get-time/or other!? I have my own etsy shop, painting glasses for weddings and celebrations and Toms.
What factors influenced the decision about your working lifestyle? Moving so much! I think if we would have stayed in one place I may be a full time working mom. I love the fact that I am able to stay home but I also miss having an out of the house career. Since my husband also travels during the week we decided it would be best for me to stay home.
How does/do your spouse or other family members play a role in your work lifestyle choices? My husband is fully supportive of anything I choose to do. He wants me to do what makes me happy and is supportive of my etsy shop and the possibility of me working outside the home also.
What do you feel you have to sacrifice, if anything, in order to have the working lifestyle you do? A little bit of down time or relaxation time for myself since I work when Thomas is sleeping.
What challenges do you face personally with your work decision? I think I don't give myself enough credit for what I actually do. I don't tell people I have an etsy shop. I feel like it is more of a hobby even though at times I have been so overwhelmed with orders I have had to put my shop on vacation to catch up. I guess I don't feel like it's good enough to say to working moms.
How do you find balance between family time and work or social time? I bring Thomas with me everywhere so his social time is my social time. Otherwise I make calls to long distance friends and family while he sleeps. Family time is anytime he is awake and my husband is home!
What is your favorite part of the day? The afternoon. When Thomas wakes up from his morning nap and I am freshly showered and we can start our day. He is always smiling I love it.
What do you do to relax / for fun? Go to the gym, it's my only "me" time. Or when I have a chance, I get a mani/pedi.
What do you “splurge” on? Baby carriers. It's an addiction, I love carrying him and the carriers that they have are all so cute!
What do you like most about your work lifestyle decision and how if affects your family? I am able to set my own hours and if my son needs me I am right here. I can put my shop on vacation mode if I get overwhelmed. I also travel a lot to see family and it allows me to do that.
What do you like most about being a mom? Everything! It seriously has been the most rewarding, yet draining job. Everyday he does something new and its amazing watching him learn. The best is when he is doing something and crawls over and sits in my lap just to be closer to me.
Now that we're all in love with Laura, be sure to check out her shop of gorgeous painted glassware (great for weddings and gifts!) and custom painted Toms shoes right here. She's currently on vacation as they're in the middle of moving to NYC (just like another one of our Monday's Moms, Shannon!) but go ahead and bookmark it or favorite it on Etsy to see her newest designs once they get settled!
