Meet your photographer
I'm Leah O'Connell, owner and photographer of Firefly Photography. I specialize in lifestyle and documentary photography for families of all ages and am passionate about creating tangible keepsakes for families that breathe truth and honor the people we love for who they are.
I hold my undergraduate degree in English with a masters in secondary education, grades 6-12, and will always have a huge heart for giving back to schools and the children/families they serve.

Questions about how this could work for your program?
Parents are saying:
"The photos Leah took of our son at his preschool were fantastic! I am SO pleased with our prints, and our son had a blast!"
"Absolutely amazing photographs!!! Worlds above the typical school photos."
"I loved the natural feel of these pictures - they absolutely captured my daughter's personality in a way conventional portraits don't!"
So I bet you're wondering...
what does this COST our SCHOOL?
This custom service is no cost to the school - in fact, you can consider it a fundraiser!
5% of profits will be donated back to the school as my way of supporting fellow working parents and the quality care/education of our children.
what ages/demographics do you photograph ?
All ages and classes sizes are able to participate in these photos. I have 10 years experience photographing infants and children from the newborn stage through teenagers, including students with disabilities and special needs.
Where do you set up?
3-4 weeks prior to photo day, I will scout for a safe area on the grounds of your school with good light and easy access for students and teachers. We can also discus indoor options to negate weather-related factors if you prefer. The extent of our props include things like quilts, sitting props for infants, and maybe a few objects things to engage with like books if necessary.
how long does it take?
Each child will have about 2 minutes with me - though every kid is different, so some need more time and some are naturals in front of the camera! Depending on the size of the school and age range, we will determine a schedule over several days that works best for your program.
There is no “assembly line” approach as in the old school photography. Classes will be assigned a time/day, then come out as a group to wait and/or play in a nearby area while we pull individuals or small groups for their photos. This eliminates pressure on the child and allows each individual the space to feel special and be themselves.
how do you deliver orders?
To keep costs and shipping low, all local print orders will be delivered to the school for parents to pick up within 2-3 weeks of ordering. Digital download packages are available immediately upon purchase.
When do we schedule?
Ideally, given the nature of our outdoor sessions, school photography sessions will take place for spring season in March-April or fall season, in September-October. It's easy to get everything squared away, but it's best to secure the ideal days for your school 1-2 months in advance to finalize details and notify parents. Summer program sessions are also available! (contact me to discuss dates and options!)
How many poses are included?
Since there's no actual "posing" involved, every child's session will be different! I will engage, play, and direct each child into various games for about 2 minutes while photographing their action and expression. Each gallery will include 4-6 final images.
Can you photograph siblings?
YES! If parents have more than one child who attend the school and would like to have them photographed both individually and together, directors or teachers are responsible for bringing those students together during one of the siblings' photo time slots. Final galleries will be combined to feature all images together.
CAN EXTENDED FAMILY MEMBERS PURCHASE PRINTS?
YES! All galleries will be password protected and arranged either individually, by class, or other method per school preference, then shared by email with the parents. Parents are welcome to share with family members who may also place orders and choose to have any products shipped anywhere in the country.
BOTTOM LINE: WHY OFFER SCHOOL PORTRAITS?
This is a zero cost investment to the school that provides additional service to the families and demonstrates the importance and celebration of each child in your care. Parents will be grateful for these wonderful images of their children and are never obligated to purchase.
Interested in commercial or documentary photography to highlight your school's awesome program? I am also available for half day sessions that document your teachers, staff, and students in their environment through artistically candid images that will highlight all your school has to offer to prospective families.
